Finland is also home to the most bizarre festivals in the world today. They are sometimes a bit strange but amazingly entertaining. The Wife Carrying World Championships held in July until St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which is held in Helsinki in March. This event is held in the south-eastern town of Sonkajarvi where husbands navigate a challenging obstacle course with their wives on their backs. The fastest husband to get through the whole course wins his wife’s weight in beer.

Couples also compete with special prizes like best costume, strongest husband or the most entertaining couple. The Sonkajarvi event has been duplicated in other countries but it is said to be the original. There is also the Air Guitar World Championships, one of the more bizarre Finland events, which is held in the city of Oulu every September. Air guitar masters meet in Oulu to see who is the most skilful.
